Questions

The questions we are working on.

Systems thinking is not a conclusion, it is a standing inquiry. These are the questions that guide the advisory work and the writing, drawn from real engagements and kept deliberately open. Where our own work speaks to a question, it sits underneath, one click away.

Start here · depth of leverage

Some questions move the system more than others.

Donella Meadows taught that the deepest places to intervene are the hardest to see. The questions are stacked by depth: parameters and tactics near the surface, paradigm at the floor, where the leverage is greatest. Hover a shallow question to see the deeper one that really governs it.

Shallow Parameters, tactics
What early signal predicts durable quality?
Is this moat being built, or only described?
Which binds: capital, people, or the capacity to sell?
What redundancy is prudence, and what is waste?
Structure How the parts relate
Best business at a fair price, or a fair business improved yearly?
Reputation: decades to build, moments to lose. What follows?
When does a business compound faster with fewer markets?
System Feedback and flow
Is quality in the object, or the relationship of use?
Why is the maintenance premium never on the balance sheet?
When must a system spend more staying alive than growing?
How do you transfer judgement, not just ownership?
Paradigm Deepest leverage
What actually compounds, and what only looks like it does?
What makes trust deserved rather than merely extended?
Why does the average outcome mislead the individual owner?

The open list

Unanswered on purpose. Several come straight out of recent engagements, abstracted from any client. Where our own writing or research speaks to one, it is linked beneath.

Quality & craft

01
Is quality in the object, or in the relationship between it and the person who uses it?
02
What is the smallest early signal that reliably predicts durable quality?
03
When does scale become an informational advantage rather than a dilution of quality? The Wrigley question: a known brand on a remote shelf beats an unknown one at any price.
04
Can quality be built in from the start, or only revealed through use and time?

Capital & compounding

05
06
Over thirty years: the best business at a fair price, or a fair business improved every year?
07
How do you tell a moat being built from one only being described?Partner sourced share of new revenue is often the tell that separates the two.
08
When is a euro of retained capital worth more inside the business than returned to owners?
09
Why do most roll ups destroy the quality they buy, and what do the rare exceptions share?

Maintenance & time

10
Why is the maintenance premium almost never on the balance sheet?
11
When must a growing system spend more on staying alive than on getting bigger?
12
Which parts of a business should be allowed to age, and which must be renewed continuously?
13
Is there an optimal rate of change for an institution built to endure?

Trust & networks

14
What makes trust deserved rather than merely extended?
15
Reputation takes decades to build and moments to lose. What should that asymmetry change about how it is managed?
16
Can a trust network be engineered, or only cultivated?
17
How much of an advisor's value is the network they can convene rather than the work they do directly?

Focus & constraint

18
When does a business with seven markets compound faster by choosing two?
19
Which is the binding constraint more often than owners believe: capital, people, or the capacity to sell?
20
What is the real cost of optionality that is never used?
21
Why is subtraction the hardest move for a successful founder to make?

Succession & governance

22
How do you transfer judgement, not just ownership?
23
What governance gives operating businesses freedom while keeping the whole coherent?
24
Why do so few businesses survive the third generation, and what do the survivors do differently?
25
When does professionalising a founder led business kill the thing that made it work?

Risk, path & endurance

26
Why does the average outcome across many companies tell an individual owner so little about their own?The ergodicity problem: the ensemble average is not the path any single family walks.
27
How should sequencing risk change the way a family draws on its wealth?
28
What level of redundancy is prudence, and what is waste?
29
Which risks are worth taking because they are survivable, and which end the game?
